Space is a very strange place, filled with melting suns to supermassive black holes. But there is another thing which we are missing here which is planet. You must be thinking that the planets are just a big ball of rock and gas. which in particular have no other work than revolving around its Sun. But planets are remarkably more unique than that. Here are strangest planets in the known universe that seems like they belong to some other crazy science fiction dimention .
1. GLIESE 581C
The Gliese 581c is a very special planet, not because of its name but because it has been voted by scientist as one of the top 3 exoplanets, likely to support alien life. However, it is very different than earth. It orbits a red dwarf star so the sky would always look like a blanket of deep crimson red colour. The other thing which makes it different is the fact that the planet is tidally locked, which means it does not rotate on its axis. Just like our moon is tidally locked with earth. so in this way, the one side of the planet is always facing away from the star and another side is always facing towards its sun. The side which is facing its sun is so much hot that if you were to stand on its surface the temperature will melt you alive.
However, the opposite side is so much cold that you would instantly freeze to your death. So you may be wondering that how could this extremely violent planet can support life on it? The answer lies in its “Twilight Region”. The twilight region is the region of the planet on its poles and halfways from its hot surface and cold surface. In this regions, the average temperature will be the mixture of hot and cold temperature from both sides and could result in a suitable temperature to support life. In 2008, we sent a signal directly to this planet and is expected to reach in 2029.
This is the largest planet which has been ever discovered by humans. This planet is so massive that it is 1.9x times the size of Jupiter and Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. The WASP-17b is located in the Scorpio constellation. This planet is so large that theoretically, it should not exist. Its huge size brake the law of how large that a planet can actually get.Because the larger the planet the larger it gravity would be, and larger the gravity the larger it effect on its core.
A high gravity could crush the planet under its own weight and eventually destroy it. This planet has extremely low density too because of this it fits into a unique class of planets called “Puffy Planets”. These kind planets have the extremely large radius with extremely low density for that size. It also has a “Retro Grade” orbit. which means that it rotates in opposite direction to its host star.
3. HD 188753Ab
You may remember that in movie star wars, The home planet of Luke Skywalker Tatooine had 2 suns, but the real life could be more interesting and full of mysteries because a planet named as HD 188753Ab is orbiting not 1 or 2, it is orbiting 3 stars. A planet orbiting 2-star system (binary system) is a very common sight in-universe.because the majority of stars occur in a binary system.
We can’t see these systems because the distance between stars is very large for human perception. This planet is 139 light years away from earth. If you could stand on the surface of this planet then you will feel 3 shadows and constant eclipse. This planet could have some beautiful sunsets and sunrises in the whole known universe.
4. 55 Cancrie
This planet is so shinnying that it illuminates all of it surrounding by scattering all of light from its host star just like a diamond. In fact, it is a Giagnaitic diamond. It is a planet made up of a diamond. It is twice the size of earth and one-third of it is made of solid diamond.
The planet is a very carbon-heavy and it is so dense that all of the carbon is in the form of solid diamond. But don’t get so excited, this diamond planet is located 40 light years away from Earth which means that even at the speed of light, it will take 40 years to reach this planet. But even if we could reach this planet, this planet has so much diamond that retrieving back a minute fraction of diamonds will overwhelm the market with supply and eventually will make the diamonds worthless on Earth. So this beautiful planet is best admired from afar.
5. GLIESE 436b
This planet seems to defy everything you thought you knew about chemistry. Because this is a giant ball of Ice on Fire. Imagine you are on an icy planet from star wars well that exactly Gliese 436b would look like. Except for the fact that the icy surface is constantly burning at 439-degree Celsius.
So you must be thinking that how this can even be possible. How can ice on burning remains solid and defy its nature? Well! the answer lies in the gravity if this planet. The planet gravity is so strong that it pulls the melted ice towards its core compressing it into a solid form. This process stops the ice to ever evaporate after burning.
When it comes to dark planets this planet officially is the darkest planet in the known universe. It reflects less than 1 % of all lights that hits it making it significantly darker than the majority of known exoplanets. The term exoplanet means that the planets which are not in our solar system or the planets which orbit around another star than our sun.
The main reason behind its dark appearance could be explained due to its light absorbing gases present in its environment. But scientists don’t really know for sure why it is so dark. but it gets creepier not only that this evil looking ball of gas does not reflect any light but it actually glow like a molten red colour as if it is a ball of coal on the fire. This is all because the surface temperature of this planet is at 1,100 degree Celsius which is so hot that it glows red.
7. HD 189773b
If you think that the weather here on earth is not perfect for you due to blazing summers or freezing winters, then just stop for a moment and be thankful that you don’t live on this planet. This planet has constantly rained glass sideways. The atmosphere of this planet is full of silicon particles which give its beautiful blue colour.
The next thing is the surface temperature which changes everything. The surface temperature is so high that the silicon particles condensed to form a solid glass. The speed of the wind on this planet is about 4,000 mph. These high-speed winds make the glass to flies around the planet with the speed of 4,000 mph sideways.
8. Wasp -12b
If you think that the living on HD 189773b is horrible then wasp-12b is a step ahead. This unfortunate planet is slowly eaten away by its star. This happened when the planet gets too close to its star that the whole planet has been heated up to on an unimaginable temperature and its mass has been soaked up as it hurtled around the star extremely fast.
The planet is approximately the size of the Jupiter. However, it appears to be larger because the molten temperature of its parent star has caused the wasp-12b to ballooned up. This poor planet loses an incredible 6 billion metric tons of mass per second. In fact, it has been torn apart so quickly that it no longer has its shape of a sphere but now it has a shape of an egg.
9. GJ 1214b
Imagine you are in the middle of an ocean. In every direction you see, there is an enormous amount of water in every direction, but there is no land to be seen. that’s exactly what would be it feels like if you were to visit GJ 1214b. Just like a planet from the Interstellar movie. This planet is 47 light years away from the Earth.
This is all because this planet has been made up entirely of water.Many scientists have been named up to this planet as “Waterworld”.The entire surface of this planet is one giant continuous ocean and it remains exactly the same for miles underneath the surface until when you hit the planet core.

The water in the core of the planet is under so immense pressure from the surface that the water of the core has been compressed into a solid ice. The last but not the least this planet has been discovered by the Kepler space observatory known as Kepler 438b. This planet is quite strange not because of its extreme and harsh climate or temperature.beacuse it is quite an opposite. This planet is presently the most Earth-like planet we have ever found.
The Earth Similarity Index is a standard measure to found out, how similar to earth and of a planet is. It compares the feature of the planet and Earth to find out the similarities between them. In this index system, 1 means that the planet is identical to eat in every aspect and 0 stands for nothing like earth. The Kepler 438b has an Earth Similarity Index of 0.88. This makes the Kepler 438b super rare and very special. Discovered in January 2015, this planet holds most of the chances to host alien life.
